A car bomb was found in the busy New York Times Square on Saturday. The bomb was put together using three propane tanks, fireworks, two filled 5-gallon gasoline containers and two clocks with batteries and electrical wires.
A street vendor told a police officer that he saw smoke coming from a Nissan sports utility vehicle that was parked on 45th street and 7th avenue. The vehicle's engine was running and its yellow hazard lights were flashing.
Police officers from the New York Police Department closed off several blocks and people were evacuated from the area. This included those who had come to see the Broadway shows in the area. A subway line was also closed off.
According to reports the police disabled the bomb using a robotic arm device. The White House said that President Barack Obama was being kept up to date on the investigation.
Two days after the event, the Pakistani Taliban said that there would be future attacks on major U.S cities. It appears that the terrorist group is claiming responsibility for the attempted bombing in New York.
The Taliban is an Islamic political party that ruled Afghanistan from 1996. They were overthrown in 2001 when the U.S. went to war in Afghanistan. The Taliban is known for its relationship with the Al-Qaeda whose leader ,Osama Bin Laden, is known for master minding the attack on the World Trade Center towers on September 9, 2011.
